How does EBT Work
The Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) system is the process by which state welfare departments distribute benefits such as food stamps and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) to recipients.
The EBT card looks like a debit card, and can be used at most stores that accept debit cards. To get one, you must first apply for benefits through your state welfare department.
If you are approved, the department will send you an EBT card in the mail. You can then use the card to withdraw cash from an ATM or to purchase goods and services at stores that accept debit cards.
Can I use EBT at Other Food Delivery Services?
The answer to this question is unfortunately no. Although food delivery services like UberEATS, Grubhub, and Gopuff accept payment via many methods, they do not offer EBT as a payment option for their customers. This means that those receiving government assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cannot use their EBT card to order food from these services. There are a few reasons for this.
First, food delivery services are not authorized by the USDA to accept SNAP benefits as payment. This is because the USDA only authorizes retailers that have a physical storefront and offer full service grocery items to accept SNAP benefits. Because food delivery services do not meet these requirements, they are not authorized to accept SNAP payments.
Second, food delivery services typically do not offer the same variety of foods that are available at traditional grocery stores.
